Dog age in human years calculator
The old "times seven" rule is wrong at both ends. A dog is about 15 in human years at one and 24 at two; after that each year adds about 4 to 7, more for bigger dogs, which age faster.
How old is my dog in human years?
A 5-year-old small dog is about 36 in human years.
| Dog age | 5 years |
|---|---|
| Human years | about 36 |
| Rule used | 15 for year one, 9 for year two, then 4 a year (small) |
How it is calculated
- Count the first two years. The first year equals about 15 human years and the second about 9 more, so a two-year-old dog is about 24.
- Add years by size. Add 4 human years for each year after two for a small dog, 5 for medium, 6 for large and 7 for giant breeds.

Questions
Is one dog year seven human years?
No. Dogs mature fast: a one-year-old dog is roughly a 15-year-old person, and a two-year-old roughly 24.
Why do big dogs age faster?
Large and giant breeds have shorter lifespans, so after age two each year counts for more human years than in a small dog.
When is a dog a senior?
Around 7 for most dogs, earlier (5 to 6) for giant breeds and later (9 to 10) for small ones.
