Chicken coop size calculator
The usual rule is 4 square feet of coop and 10 square feet of run per standard-size hen, about half that for bantams, one nest box for every four hens and 8 to 10 inches of roost each.
How big a coop do my chickens need?
6 chickens need about 24 sq ft of coop and 60 sq ft of run, with 2 nest boxes.
| Coop floor | 24 sq ft (4 per bird) |
|---|---|
| Run | 60 sq ft (10 per bird) |
| Nest boxes | 2 (one per 4 hens) |
| Roost | 4.5 ft of perch (9 in per bird) |
How it is calculated
- Count the birds. Count every chicken that will sleep in the coop.
- Multiply by the space per bird. Allow 4 sq ft of coop and 10 sq ft of run per standard hen, 2 and 6 per bantam, 5 and 12 per large bird.
- Add nest boxes and roost. Add one nest box for every 4 hens and about 9 inches of roost per standard bird.
