Is a Senegal chameleon good for beginners?

The detail
The Senegal chameleon is a small West African species that is often sold cheaply as a starter animal. Most are wild-caught imports that arrive stressed and carrying parasites, so it is a harder first chameleon than its price suggests.
- Best fit
- Keepers who can source captive-bred
- Handling
- 2 out of 5 (Easily stressed)
- Setup complexity
- 3 out of 5 (UVB, misting, airflow)
- Feeding ease
- 3 out of 5 (Small live insects)
What to weigh
Imports often decline within months from parasites and dehydration. A captive-bred veiled is usually the easier first chameleon.
