Senegal chameleon
Chameleon · 0 live listings
The Senegal chameleon is a small West African species that is often sold cheaply as a starter animal. Most are wild-caught imports that arrive stressed and carrying parasites, so it is a harder first chameleon than its price suggests.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Imports often decline within months from parasites and dehydration. A captive-bred veiled is usually the easier first chameleon.
Common questions
Is it a good first chameleon?
Not usually as an import. Captive-bred Senegals are uncommon; if you want an easy start, a captive-bred veiled is more forgiving.
How do I check an import?
Ask whether it is captive-bred with a hatch record or imported. For an import, ask for a clear fecal and a vet exam, and check for sunken eyes, a weak grip and a thin tail base.
Is it legal where I live?
Chameleons are CITES Appendix II, so an imported animal needs CITES paperwork, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
What health tests should a Senegal chameleon have?
Ask for Fecal exam clear, Exotics vet exam on file, DNA parentage report, Hatch or birth record on file and Photo ID on file.
