The detail
The panther chameleon is a Madagascar species prized for its colour, which varies by locality such as Ambilobe or Nosy Be. It is widely captive-bred, and a known locality line tells you roughly how a male will colour up as an adult.
- Best fit
- Keepers who want colour and a display
- Handling
- 2 out of 5 (Display animal, not a cuddler)
- Setup complexity
- 4 out of 5 (Humidity, UVB, airflow)
- Feeding ease
- 3 out of 5 (Live, dusted insects)
What to weigh
Hatchlings are dull, so you are buying on the locality and parents rather than the colour you see. Like all chameleons they need a careful misting routine, and females can become egg-bound.
