A median appears once a breed has at least 10 asking prices.

Methodology

  1. What is counted: every listing buyers can browse on Everybarn when the figures are computed. That is listings on Everybarn by identity-verified sellers, and listings on other sites Everybarn indexes that are still live at their source.
  2. Asking prices, not sale prices: a price here is what the seller asked. Everybarn does not know what an animal listed on another site sold for.
  3. Which prices count: US dollars only, and only inside the plausible range Everybarn sets for each animal (the range its listing form checks), so a placeholder price or a typo does not move a figure.
  4. Median and middle half: the median is the middle price (the mean of the two middle prices for an even count). The middle half runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile, interpolated between the nearest prices.
  5. Minimums: a median is shown only when it rests on at least 10 prices, and a state only with at least 10 prices for that animal. A price guide is published once an animal or breed has at least 10 prices.
  6. Places: a listing counts in the state it gives. A listing without a state counts in the national figures only.
  7. Timing: the figures are recomputed at least once a week from the listings live at that moment; the date above is when these were computed.
  8. No personal data: the figures are counts and prices. No seller, buyer or listing is identified.
