The detail
Woolly llamas grow heavy fiber over the body, neck, head and legs, often with tufted ears, the type bred for the most fleece. They make showy fiber and pet animals but need regular shearing to cope with summer heat.
- Temperament
- Calm, independent, alert
- Best fit
- Fiber and show homes
- Docility
- 4 out of 5 (Calm, independent)
- Hardiness
- 3 out of 5 (Heavy coat, heat risk)
What to weigh
A heavy coat means yearly shearing and a real heat-stress risk in hot, humid summers. Llamas must never live alone, and bottle-raised intact males can develop berserk male syndrome.
