Buyer question
Is a Texel guinea pig good for beginners?
Usually not: our Animal Library rates the Texel guinea pig 2 out of 5 for beginners (coat care makes it harder).

The detail
The Texel is a long-haired guinea pig with a curly coat that falls in ringlets, combining the Silkie's long hair with a rex-type curl. It is one of the most demanding coats in the hobby, and it suits a keeper ready for careful grooming.
- Best fit
- Experienced keepers, show
- Handling
- 4 out of 5 (Calm, rarely bites)
- Care load
- 5 out of 5 (Daily brushing, regular trims)
What to weigh
Curls trap hay, bedding and droppings, so the coat needs gentle combing, regular trims and a clean rear. Matting can hide sores and weight loss.
