Buyer question

Is a Peruvian guinea pig good for beginners?

Usually not: our Animal Library rates the Peruvian guinea pig 2 out of 5 for beginners (coat care makes it harder).

The detail

The Peruvian is a long-haired guinea pig whose coat grows forward over the face from a part at the rump, and it can reach well past the body in show animals. It is striking but demanding: without regular trims the coat mats, soils and hides health problems.

Best fit
Experienced keepers, show
Handling
4 out of 5 (Calm, rarely bites)
Care load
5 out of 5 (Daily brushing, regular trims)

What to weigh

The coat is the whole job: daily brushing and regular trims for pets, or wrapping for show. Matted long hair hides weight loss, sores and flystrike, so checks must be hands-on.
