The detail
A round, sturdy cat from the Isle of Man, best known for a tailless or short-tailed look caused by a dominant gene. Manx are playful, loyal and dog-like, but the tailless gene carries real spinal risks.
- Temperament
- Playful, loyal, social
- Best fit
- Families, informed buyers
- Energy
- 3 out of 5 (Playful, strong jumper)
- Grooming load
- 2 out of 5 (Weekly; more for longhair)
What to weigh
The gene for taillessness can cause Manx syndrome: spinal defects that affect walking, bladder and bowel control. Problems often show in the first months, so buying an older kitten reduces risk.
