The detail
A round, sturdy cat from the Isle of Man, best known for a tailless or short-tailed look caused by a dominant gene. Manx are playful, loyal and dog-like, but the tailless gene carries real spinal risks.

What to weigh
The gene for taillessness can cause Manx syndrome: spinal defects that affect walking, bladder and bowel control. Problems often show in the first months, so buying an older kitten reduces risk.
