The detail

Bred in the Scottish Highlands to go to ground after foxes, badgers and vermin, the Scottie is a short-legged, sturdy terrier with a big-dog attitude. Dignified, independent and loyal to its family, it can be reserved with strangers and firm about its own ideas.

Best fit
Adult homes, city or country
Temperament
Dignified, bold, independent

What to weigh

Scotties dig, bark and can be snappy if teased, so they suit homes with older children. The breed has a high rate of bladder cancer, and the wiry coat needs regular grooming.
