The detail

Bred for centuries as a companion in the imperial palaces of China, the Pekingese is a small, lion-like dog with a heavy mane and a dignified, independent manner. Loyal to its family, it is happiest in a calm, cool home.

Best fit
Calm adult homes
Temperament
Dignified, loyal, stubborn

What to weigh

The flat face means breathing problems, snoring and serious risk in heat. The prominent eyes injure easily, the long back is prone to disc disease, and the coat needs regular care.
