Is a Pekingese a good first dog?
It can be, for a calm adult household. Pekes are loyal and low-energy but stubborn and wary of rough children. Keep them cool and handle the back with care.
What health problems do Pekes have, and what should be tested?
Brachycephalic airway syndrome, eye injuries, intervertebral disc disease, luxating kneecaps and heart disease are common. Ask for a patella check, a recent eye exam and a cardiac exam on both parents, and choose parents with open nostrils and quiet breathing.
Can Pekingese live in hot climates?
Only with care. Their flat faces and heavy coats make them prone to heatstroke. Keep them indoors with air conditioning in hot weather.
