Developed in Bavaria to drive cattle and guard farms and breweries, later a police and military dog, the Giant Schnauzer is powerful, smart and territorial. It needs daily hard exercise, firm training and an experienced owner who wants a working partner.

What to weigh

Giants are intense, protective and easily bored, and they will test an inexperienced owner. The wiry coat needs regular stripping or clipping, and the beard carries water and food.
