Is a Giant Schnauzer a good first dog?
No. Giants are loyal and trainable but powerful, territorial and demanding. They suit experienced owners who enjoy daily training and dog sports.
What health problems do Giant Schnauzers have, and what should be tested?
Hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, eye disease, heart disease and toe cancer in black dogs occur. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a thyroid panel, a cardiac exam and a recent eye exam on both parents.
Do Giant Schnauzers shed?
Very little, but the coat grows and needs hand-stripping or clipping every few weeks. Clipping is easier but softens the coat.
