The detail
The original Schnauzer, bred on German farms to catch rats, guard the yard and ride along with carts to market. Smart, spirited and loyal, the Standard is a medium-sized all-rounder that needs daily exercise, training and grooming.
What to weigh
Standards are clever enough to outwit a lax owner and bark at anything unusual. They need daily exercise and mental work, and the wiry coat needs regular grooming.
