Is a Standard Schnauzer a good first dog?
It can be, for an owner who enjoys training. Standards are loyal and adaptable but independent and protective, so start training and socialization early.
What health problems do Standard Schnauzers have, and what should be tested?
A generally healthy breed. Hip dysplasia, eye disease and an inherited dilated cardiomyopathy occur. Ask for OFA hips, a recent eye exam and a DCM DNA result on both parents.
How is it different from the Miniature and Giant Schnauzer?
The Standard is the original breed. The Miniature was bred down as a small ratter and companion, and the Giant was bred up for driving cattle and guarding. They are separate breeds with different temperaments.
