The detail
An ancient Chinese breed used to guard, haul and hunt, the Chow Chow is known for its lion-like ruff, stilted gait and blue-black tongue. Dignified and aloof, it bonds closely with its family and needs early socialization and respectful handling.
What to weigh
Chows are wary of strangers and can be protective or intolerant of other dogs. The thick coat overheats easily, sheds heavily and needs regular brushing.
