Is a Chow Chow a good first dog?
Rarely. Chows are clean and loyal but independent and suspicious of strangers. They need an owner who socializes early and handles them calmly and consistently.
What health problems do Chows have, and what should be tested?
Entropion, hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, luxating kneecaps and glaucoma occur. Ask for OFA hips, elbows and thyroid, a patella check and a recent eye exam on both parents.
Are Chows good with children?
They can be with their own family's respectful older children, but Chows dislike rough handling and may not accept visiting children. Supervise always.
