The detail
A South African mastiff bred by settlers to guard remote farms against predators and intruders. Powerful, confident and devoted to its family, the Boerboel is a serious guardian that needs an experienced owner, early socialization and firm, calm leadership.
What to weigh
A Boerboel is territorial and strong enough to overpower most adults, so training and socialization are not optional. Some lines are dog-aggressive, and giant size means short lives and costly care.
