Is a Boerboel a good first dog?
No. Boerboels are loyal and calm with family but protective and very powerful. They need an owner with large-breed guardian experience, early socialization and lifelong training.
What health problems do Boerboels have, and what should be tested?
Hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid problems such as entropion and ectropion, heart disease and bloat are the main concerns. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a cardiac exam and a recent eye exam on both parents.
Are Boerboels good with children?
Well-bred, well-raised Boerboels are often gentle with their own family's children, but their size alone is a risk around toddlers, and they may react to visiting children's rough play. Always supervise.
