Zulu is a recessive African fat-tailed gecko morph with an altered, often reduced or broken banding pattern. A visual Zulu needs two copies, and it is often combined with whiteout, stripe and other recessives in modern projects.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Zulu expression varies and can be confused with other pattern changes, so records matter. Het claims cannot be seen and take generations to prove.
Common questions
How is Zulu inherited?
It is recessive. Two hets produce about one visual Zulu in four on average, and a visual Zulu to a het produces about half visuals.
How can I tell a Zulu from a patterned normal?
It is not always easy. Ask for parent photos and records showing where the gene came from, and compare to known visual Zulus.
What health test should I ask for?
Ask whether the colony has had a crypto test and a clear fecal. Crypto causes wasting in geckos with no reliable cure. Look for a thick tail and clean shed.
What health tests should a Zulu african fat-tailed gecko have?
Ask for Fecal exam clear, Cryptosporidium PCR negative, Exotics vet exam on file, Genetics report for het claims, Hatch or birth record on file and Photo ID on file.
