Winter White Dwarf

The Winter White, or Djungarian, dwarf is a small hamster from Kazakhstan and Siberia whose coat can turn nearly white in winter under natural daylight. Many sold under the name are hybrids, so an owner should ask for a litter record.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A short life and a small, quick body that is easy to drop. Pure Winter Whites are hard to confirm, and hybrids carry a higher diabetes risk.
Common questions
Is it pure or a hybrid?
Hybrids with Campbell's dwarfs are common and hard to tell apart. A pure Winter White has a rounder face, a dark stripe that widens at the shoulders, and a coat that may whiten in winter. A litter record naming both parents is the best evidence.
What health checks should I ask for?
Ask for the birth date, vet-confirmed sex and a litter record. Check that the rear end is clean and dry: wet tail, a fast bowel infection, strikes young hamsters stressed by weaning or moving, and needs a vet the same day. A vet exam on file is a plus.
Can I keep a hamster where I live?
In most of the United States, yes, but Hawaii prohibits hamsters. Rules vary and can change, so confirm your state and local law before you buy.
Ask the seller for these. Documents on Everybarn are on file for your own checks; we don't check them with the issuer.
