White-throat monitor
Monitor Lizard · 0 live listings
The white-throat monitor is a large southern African monitor, close kin of the black-throat, with a pale throat and banded pattern. It needs the same room-sized enclosure and very hot basking, and captive-bred animals can tame well.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A large, strong adult that needs a custom enclosure and a confident keeper. Imports are more defensive than captive-bred animals.
Common questions
How does it differ from a black-throat?
They are closely related and kept alike. White-throats have a paler throat and come from southern Africa; size and care are similar.
Captive-bred or imported?
Prefer captive-bred with a hatch record and a PIT tag number. For an import, ask for a vet exam and clear fecal, and check for mites and a full tail base.
Is it legal where I live?
Monitors are CITES Appendix II, so an import needs CITES paperwork. Florida prohibits Nile monitors and regulates others, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
