The veiled chameleon comes from the hot, dry mountain valleys of Yemen and southwest Saudi Arabia and carries a tall casque on its head. It is the hardiest chameleon in the hobby and widely captive-bred, which makes it the usual first chameleon.

Chameleons are watched, not handled, and most stress when held. Females lay eggs even without a male, so a female needs a laying bin and careful calcium, and egg binding is a real risk.

Is a veiled a good first chameleon?
Yes. It tolerates a wider range of temperature and humidity than most chameleons and is easy to find captive-bred. It still needs UVB, a misting or drip system and a screen enclosure set up before it arrives.
How do I tell a healthy one?
Look for bright eyes that track you, a firm grip, a straight casque and legs, and no sunken eyes. Ask for a hatch record showing it is captive-bred rather than imported, and watch it drink from droplets.
Is it legal where I live?
Chameleons are CITES Appendix II, so an imported animal needs CITES paperwork, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
