The tradeoffs, honestly

A decades-long commitment to a large lizard that needs a big, very hot enclosure. Imports are common and can carry heavy parasite loads.

Common questions

Captive-bred or imported?

Most Egyptians are imports. Prefer captive-bred with a hatch record; for an import, ask for a vet exam and clear fecal, and look for a full tail base and firm jaw.

How much space does an adult need?

More than smaller uromastyx: plan for an enclosure of at least six feet long with a large, very hot basking area and wide UVB coverage.

Is it legal where I live?

Uromastyx are CITES Appendix II, so an imported animal needs CITES paperwork, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
