Long-haired Syrian
Hamster · Syrian · 0 live listings
The long-haired Syrian, often sold as the teddy bear hamster, is the same species as the golden hamster with a recessive long-coat gene. Males grow a long skirt of hair, so an owner adds gentle grooming to normal Syrian care.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Long hair picks up bedding and food and can mat or soil around the rear, especially on males. Otherwise it is a Syrian: solitary, nocturnal and short-lived.
Common questions
How much grooming does it need?
Check the coat every few days and comb out bedding with a soft toothbrush. Paper-based bedding tangles less than shavings. Never bathe a hamster in water.
What health checks should I ask for?
Ask for the birth date, vet-confirmed sex and a litter record. Check that the rear end is clean and dry: wet tail, a fast bowel infection, strikes young hamsters stressed by weaning or moving, and needs a vet the same day. A vet exam on file is a plus.
Can I keep a hamster where I live?
In most of the United States, yes, but Hawaii prohibits hamsters. Rules vary and can change, so confirm your state and local law before you buy.
Ask the seller for these. Documents on Everybarn are on file for your own checks; we don't check them with the issuer.
