The Syrian, or golden hamster, is the largest pet hamster and the easiest to handle, bred in captivity since the 1930s from a small wild population. It is strictly solitary as an adult, so an owner keeps one per enclosure and never a pair.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A short life of two to three years, and it is awake at night when children are asleep. It needs a far larger enclosure and deeper bedding than most pet-store cages provide.
Common questions
Can two Syrians share a cage?
No. Adult Syrians fight, often badly, once they mature at about eight to ten weeks. Keep one per enclosure.
What health checks should I ask for?
Ask for the birth date, vet-confirmed sex and a litter record. Check that the rear end is clean and dry: wet tail, a fast bowel infection, strikes young hamsters stressed by weaning or moving, and needs a vet the same day. A vet exam on file is a plus.
Can I keep a hamster where I live?
In most of the United States, yes, but Hawaii prohibits hamsters. Rules vary and can change, so confirm your state and local law before you buy.
Ask the seller for these. Documents on Everybarn are on file for your own checks; we don't check them with the issuer.
