The speckled kingsnake, often called the salt-and-pepper snake, comes from the central US and is black with a small yellow or white spot in nearly every scale. It is a hardy kingsnake with the family appetite and the family habit of eating other snakes.

Why is it called salt-and-pepper?
Each dark scale has a pale spot, so from a distance the snake looks sprinkled. The effect is strongest in adults.
Is it a good first snake?
Yes for most keepers. It feeds well on frozen-thawed mice and needs a simple setup with a locked lid, housed alone.
What should I ask for before buying?
Ask for a clear fecal and a negative crypto PCR, and a dated feeding log showing several meals on frozen-thawed mice. A hatch record with the parents and clutch date shows the snake is captive-bred.
