The longhaired Abyssinian, with a ticked, fox-like coat and a full, brushy tail. Somalis are just as busy and curious as Abyssinians, and they need play, height and attention every day.

The tradeoffs, honestly
A Somali rarely sits still and gets bored alone. It shares the Abyssinian’s inherited risks for blood, eye and kidney disease.
Common questions
What health tests should the parents have?
Ask for DNA results for pyruvate kinase deficiency and rdAc progressive retinal atrophy on both parents, and about family history of renal amyloidosis. Keep up with dental care.
Is a Somali a lap cat?
Rarely. Somalis are affectionate but busy. They prefer to be involved and playing, and they suit owners who enjoy an active cat.
Does the coat need much grooming?
Not much. The coat is fine and mats little. A weekly comb is usually enough, with more during shedding.
