Shetlands get fat easily and are very prone to laminitis and hyperlipemia. Without firm, consistent handling, they learn to push people around.

What health checks should a Shetland have?
A pre-purchase exam with metabolic bloodwork, a hoof check for past laminitis, and a dental exam. Ask about grazing and diet history, and whether the pony has ever had hyperlipemia.
Is a Shetland good for a small child?
A well-schooled one can be, but they are strong and smart. An adult should handle training and ground manners so the pony stays safe.
Why is the height limit different in the US?
The UK studbook limits Shetlands to about 42 inches. The American Shetland registry allows up to 46 inches and includes a more refined type.
