Santa Gertrudis were developed on the King Ranch in Texas from Shorthorn and Brahman, and in 1940 became the first beef breed recognized as developed in the US. They are deep red, heat tolerant and grow well on grass.

What makes Santa Gertrudis different?
Roughly five-eighths Shorthorn and three-eighths Brahman, stabilized as a true breed. You get heat tolerance with more beef-type body than a straight Brahman.
What health tests should Santa Gertrudis have?
Ask for a negative BVD-PI ear-notch test on every animal, a Johne's herd status, and a recent trich test on any breeding bull. Breeding stock crossing state lines also needs a health certificate and official ID.
Do they work in the North?
They can, but their strength is heat and humidity. In cold climates a British breed usually holds condition better through winter.
