Sables are colored Saanens, carrying the same Swiss dairy build and heavy milk production in black, brown, grey or patterned coats. ADGA recognized them as their own breed in 2005, and they suit owners who want high milk volume.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Sables give a lot of milk, which means twice-daily milking and a high feed bill during lactation. Light-skinned animals can sunburn, and bucks are large and strong in rut.

How much milk does a Sable give?
Like Saanens, good does can give a gallon or more a day at peak, with butterfat around 3 to 4 percent. ADGA milk records on the dam and granddams are the best guide.
What health tests should they have?
Ask for negative CAE, CL and Johne's results from the herd, ideally tested within the last year by an accredited lab. Official scrapie ID is required for most interstate goat moves. A clean herd history matters more than one clean animal.
Can a Saanen give birth to a Sable?
Yes. Color in Saanens is recessive-carried, so colored kids from two Saanens are registered as Sables. That is how the breed started.
