Pygoras are a fiber goat bred in Oregon from Pygmy and Angora goats, with a registry since 1987. They grow soft mohair, cashmere-like down or a mix, and their small size and friendly nature make them popular with handspinners.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Fleece must be sheared or combed once or twice a year, and freshly shorn goats need shelter from cold and rain. Like all goats they need a companion and secure fencing.

What are Pygora fleece types?
The Pygora Breeders Association classes fleece as Type A (long, lustrous mohair), Type B (a blend) and Type C (fine, cashmere-like down). Ask which type the animal and its parents grow.
What health tests should they have?
Ask for negative CAE, CL and Johne's results from the herd, ideally tested within the last year by an accredited lab. Official scrapie ID is required for most interstate goat moves. A clean herd history matters more than one clean animal.
How often are Pygoras shorn?
Usually once or twice a year, depending on fleece type. Type C goats can shed seasonally and are often combed instead. Plan for skirting and storing fiber if you shear at home.
