Is a Pointer a good first dog?
Only for a very active owner. Pointers are gentle and friendly at home, but their exercise needs are high, and field lines especially need space to run. Show-bred dogs are usually calmer.
What health problems do Pointers have, and what should be tested?
A generally healthy breed. Hip dysplasia, eye disease, hypothyroidism and deafness occur. Ask for OFA hips, a thyroid panel and a recent eye exam on both parents.
Can a Pointer be let off leash?
Only in safe, enclosed areas unless it has strong field training. Pointers are bred to range widely and follow scent, so recall breaks down quickly when a bird flushes.
