Pigeons produce dust and droppings, so lofts need regular cleaning. Homing breeds may fly home to their old loft.

Homing breeds return to where they were raised, so new birds need to settle before flying free.

What health checks should pigeons have?

Ask whether they are vaccinated for pigeon paramyxovirus (PPMV-1) and treated for canker and worms. Look for clear eyes, clean nostrils and a clean vent, and quarantine new birds for a few weeks.

What are pigeon bands?

Seamless leg bands identify the bird, year and loft. They are required for racing.
