Pietrains are a Belgian breed known for very heavy muscling and lean carcasses, with white coats and black spots. They are used as terminal sires in commercial crosses to add muscle and lean meat.

Many Pietrains carry the halothane stress gene, which can cause sudden death under stress and paler meat. Stress-negative lines are available and worth the extra questions.
Common questions
What is the halothane gene?
A gene linked to porcine stress syndrome. Carriers can die suddenly under stress. A DNA test tells you if a pig is stress-negative, a carrier or positive.
What health tests should they have?
Ask about the herd's PRRS and PEDv status and whether breeding stock tested negative for brucellosis and pseudorabies. Ask for the HAL stress-gene result too. Pigs moving interstate need official ID and, in most states, a health certificate.
Are Pietrains good on a small farm?
Usually not as a purebred. They are best used as terminal sires in crosses, where their muscling shows without the full stress risk.
