Parson Russell Terrier

The longer-legged, square-built version of the Rev. John Russell's fox-working terrier, bred to keep pace with hunting horses and bolt foxes. The Parson is bold, clever and athletic, with energy that needs daily running, work and training.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Parsons dig, bark and chase, and they can jump or climb out of low fences. Under-exercised, they become destructive and noisy.
Common questions
Is a Parson Russell a good first dog?
Rarely. Parsons are affectionate and funny but intense and stubborn. They suit active owners who enjoy agility, earthdog or other dog sports.
What health problems do Parsons have, and what should be tested?
Primary lens luxation, deafness, luxating kneecaps and inherited ataxia occur. Ask for a BAER hearing test, a recent eye exam, a patella check and DNA results for PLL and ataxia on both parents.
Can Parsons live with cats?
Some can if raised with them, but prey drive is strong. Small pets like rodents and birds are at risk.
