The ornate uromastyx is a desert lizard from the Sinai and Arabian Peninsula, with males showing bright blue, green and orange. Like all uromastyx it is a plant eater that needs a very hot basking spot and strong UVB to stay healthy.

The basking spot must be far hotter than most lizards need, and too little heat or UVB leads to poor digestion and bone problems. Many are imports, so sourcing takes care.

Captive-bred or imported?
Many ornates are wild-caught imports. Prefer captive-bred with a hatch record, and ask for a clear fecal. Check for a full tail base, alert eyes and no signs of metabolic bone disease such as soft jaws.
What does it eat?
Mostly leafy greens, with seeds and lentils. Insects are an occasional extra at most, and too much protein is a common mistake.
Is it legal where I live?
Uromastyx are CITES Appendix II, so an imported animal needs CITES paperwork, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
