Is a Norwegian Elkhound a good first dog?
It can be, for an active owner. Elkhounds are friendly, hardy and loyal but independent and vocal. Training needs to be firm, fair and consistent.
What health problems do Elkhounds have, and what should be tested?
Hip dysplasia, PRA, kidney disease, hypothyroidism and sebaceous cysts occur. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a thyroid panel, a recent eye exam and a chondrodysplasia DNA result on both parents.
Do Elkhounds do well in hot climates?
Not well. Their dense double coat suits cold climates. In hot areas they need air conditioning, shade and exercise in the cool of the day.
