Blue-tongue Skink · 1 live listings
The northern blue-tongue skink is a large, calm Australian lizard with a bright blue tongue and bold bands, and it is the most common blue-tongue in captivity. It is also where the morphs are found, including hypo, albino, caramel and anery.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A blue-tongue needs a large enclosure, UVB and a varied omnivore diet, and lives 15 to 20 years or more. Australian types are captive-bred, which is good, but they are rarely cheap.
Common questions
Which northern morphs are recessive?
Albino, caramel and anery are recessive, so a visual needs two copies and a het looks normal. Hypo is a lighter, reduced-black look. Ask for parent records to back any het claim.
Is a northern a good first large lizard?
Yes. Northerns are usually calm, handle well and eat a varied diet of protein, greens and some fruit. Budget for a 4×2×2 ft enclosure and UVB.
What health checks should I ask for?
A hatch record, a weight log and a clear fecal. An adenovirus test on the colony is a plus. Look for clear eyes, clean nostrils and a firm body.
What health tests should a Northern blue-tongue skink have?
Ask for Fecal exam clear, Adenovirus PCR negative, Exotics vet exam on file, Genetics report for het claims, Hatch or birth record on file and Photo ID on file.
