A short-legged cat from a dominant gene first bred in Louisiana in the 1980s. Munchkins are playful and friendly, but the gene is a form of dwarfism, and major registries disagree about whether it should be bred.

Are Munchkins healthy?
The gene causes a form of dwarfism, and studies suggest higher rates of joint and bone changes. Some Munchkins live normal lives; others develop problems. TICA recognizes the breed; CFA does not.
What should I ask the breeder about health?
Confirm short-legged cats are always paired with long-legged ones, since two copies of the gene are lethal. Ask for heart screening and vet records, and about any lordosis or chest deformity in the line.
Can a Munchkin climb?
Yes, but less well. They run fast and play hard, but struggle with high jumps. Ramps and low platforms help, and keeping weight down protects joints.
