The tradeoffs, honestly

Captive-bred animals are harder to find, and imports bring parasite and stress risk. Heat and UVB needs are as intense as any uromastyx.

Captive-bred or imported?

Prefer captive-bred with a hatch record. For an import, ask for a clear fecal and a vet exam, and check the tail base, eyes and jaw for signs of dehydration or metabolic bone disease.

Can I keep two together?

Males usually fight. Keepers who house uromastyx together use a large enclosure, one male at most, and watch closely for bullying.

Is it legal where I live?

Uromastyx are CITES Appendix II, so an imported animal needs CITES paperwork, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
