The Mexican black kingsnake is a solid, glossy black kingsnake from northwestern Mexico and the edge of southern Arizona. Adults carry an iridescent sheen, and the plain black look makes it one of the most striking simple snakes kept.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A strong feeding response means some bite by mistake at feeding time. Like all kingsnakes it must live alone, because it will eat another snake.
Common questions
Does it stay black?
Yes. Some hatchlings show faint light flecks that usually fade, and adults are solid black with an iridescent sheen.
Is it a good first snake?
Often, yes. It is hardy, eats readily and tolerates handling once past the nippy hatchling stage. Use tongs at feeding, a locked lid, and house it alone.
What should I ask for before buying?
Ask for a clear fecal and a negative crypto PCR, and a dated feeding log showing several meals on frozen-thawed mice. A hatch record with the parents and clutch date shows the snake is captive-bred.
