Most need yearly shearing to cope with summer heat. Llamas must never live alone, and bottle-raised intact males can develop berserk male syndrome.

Does a medium-wool llama need shearing?
Most do, at least a barrel cut before summer. Unshorn llamas in hot, humid weather are at real risk of heat stress, so give shade, water and airflow as well.
What is berserk male syndrome?
A bottle-raised or over-handled intact male can come to treat people as rivals and turn aggressive as he matures, charging, biting and knocking people down. Gelding does not reliably fix it once it starts. Ask how any young male was raised.
What health records should a llama have?
Ask for a negative BVD test, since a persistently infected cria sheds the virus for life, plus the herd's TB and Johne's status and a current CD&T. Where white-tailed deer roam, ask about the meningeal worm plan. ILR registration with DNA parentage confirms the pedigree.
