A baroque breed founded in 1580 at Lipica and made famous by the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Lipizzans are born dark and turn grey, mature slowly and live long, and they are strong, intelligent and willing.

The tradeoffs, honestly

Lipizzans mature slowly and start work later than many breeds. Grey horses have a high lifetime risk of melanoma.

Common questions

What should the pre-purchase exam cover?

Check for melanomas under the tail, around the sheath and head, and ask for metabolic bloodwork, as many are easy keepers. Include flexions and radiographs for a dressage horse.

Why do Lipizzans turn white?

They carry the grey gene. Foals are born dark and lighten over six to ten years. A rare few stay bay or black.

Is a Lipizzan good for an amateur?

A schooled, older Lipizzan can be. They are willing and clever, but strong. Good training makes the difference.
