Lineolated Parakeet

Lineolated parakeets, or linnies, are small, calm parrots from the mountain forests of Mexico to Panama and the Andes. They are quieter than most parrots and gentle when handled daily, which makes them a good fit for apartments and first-time keepers.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Linnies are quiet and gentle but less flashy than larger parrots, and some learn only a few words. They like to walk and climb, so a wide cage matters more than a tall one.
Common questions
Are linnies good for apartments?
Usually, yes. Their chatter is soft and they rarely scream, which makes them one of the quietest parrots.
What health checks should a linnie come with?
Ask for an avian vet exam and, ideally, tests for psittacosis, PBFD and avian polyomavirus. Look for clean nares, full feathering and a bird that is fully weaned and eating on its own.
Do linnies come in colors?
Yes. Green is the wild type, and breeders produce turquoise, cobalt, lutino, creamino and other mutations. Color does not change care.
