Is a Leonberger a good first dog?
It can be, for a family with space and time. Leos are gentle and trainable, but their size means early training and socialization are essential.
What health problems do Leonbergers have, and what should be tested?
Hip and elbow dysplasia, polyneuropathy, leukoencephalomyelopathy, bone cancer and bloat. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a recent eye exam, a thyroid panel and DNA results for LPN1, LPN2 and LEMP on both parents.
Do Leonbergers do well in hot climates?
Not well. Their heavy double coat and size make them prone to overheating. They need shade, air conditioning and exercise in the cool of the day.
