A sturdy, naturally bobtailed breed from the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin, shaped by a cold, wild environment. Kurilians are hardy, clever hunters, gentle with their families and often fond of water.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Kurilians are rare outside Russia and Europe, and they mature slowly. Their hunting drive means small pets like birds and rodents are at risk.
Common questions
What health checks should the parents have?
The breed is known for good health. Ask for a full vet exam of the kitten, including the tail and spine, and heart screening on the parents if offered.
Is the bobtail linked to health problems?
Not in the way the Manx gene is. The Kurilian’s kinked tail is a natural trait with no known spinal problems. Handle the tail gently.
Is a Kurilian good with children?
Yes. They are gentle and tolerant, and enjoy active play. Supervise with small pets, as their hunting instinct is strong.
